3 Meaningful Ways to Celebrate Easter

I recently saw an article entitled "How to Celebrate Easter if you aren't Religious". I had to stop and think a minute; what is there to celebrate on Easter if you aren't a Christian? It reminded me how we have strayed far away from what Easter Sunday is really all about. It has become a commercialized day celebrated with tacky treats and wasteful spending. In truth, celebrating the day in fun ways is not wrong but everything we do should lead us back to the meaning of the day. With that being said, I want to give you three meaningful ways that we can celebrate the Resurrection this Easter season.

(I'm not going to list going to Easter worship. I hope that one has already been settled for you.)

1. Read the Easter story together with family and friends. In traditional church liturgy, reading the Easter story is a major part of the celebration of Passion Week. Unfortunately, as Southern Baptists, we don't focus on this as much. However, there is no better way to reflect on the events surrounding His death and resurrection than by reading the stories in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Gather 'round with family and friends and take turns reading through the stories of Easter beginning at Jesus' Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem.

2. Fellowship with loved ones over a meal. People often rib us Baptists about our passion for eating but I actually think this is a pretty biblical hobby. Think about it! When Jesus wanted to tell His disciples that He was leaving, He did so over a meal. After He arose, He had His disciples gather by the Sea of Galilee and they had breakfast. Enjoy a meal after worshipping the Lord and celebrate that He is alive and tell how His story has impacted your life.

3. Use a Family Easter Egg Hunt to demonstrate the Gospel to the kids. Having an Easter Egg Hunt is one of the foundational parts of celebrating this annual holiday. I can remember as a child when we would have an family egg hunt after Easter lunch. These hunts provide you with some great illustrations for the Gospel. An egg teaches us about life which is what the resurrection is about. Finding what was hidden and lost is a great lesson about our salvation and how Christ found is us when we were lost. You can get as creative as you want, but don't let it just be a hunt for eggs. Take it as a time to teach those little ones in your family about Christ and His story.

However you celebrate Easter, I hope you place Jesus at the center of all that you do. I hope you take some time to reflect on what He has done for us and the difference that it makes in our lives. From me, my family, and our church body to yours, we say HAPPY EASTER!!!! HE IS RISEN!!!!
